A great paint finish starts before the first finish coat is applied. Walls and trim develop imperfections over time. Nail holes, dents, drywall cracks, failed caulk, rough patches, previous repairs, peeling areas, and other small defects can become more noticeable once a fresh coat of paint is applied.
Depending on the condition of the room, preparation may involve patching holes, repairing minor drywall damage, sanding surfaces, caulking gaps, cleaning problem areas, and priming where needed.
Some homes require more preparation than others.
An older home in Birmingham or Northville may have very different surfaces and architectural details than a newer home in Novi or Canton. A previously wallpapered room may require additional work. Homes with extensive trim, built-ins, high ceilings, decorative moulding, or specialty finishes can also require a different approach.
Proper preparation helps create smoother surfaces, cleaner lines, and a more consistent finish. Simply painting over existing problems usually does not make those problems disappear.
